I thought check engine light for 83 was triggered by the speedo
transmission box, has nothing to do with sensor output, just amount of
miles. just push the reset button and it goes away.

... what US urq has a check engine light!!! Oh, we're talking about an
'88 90Q ...
I don't know about your particular model, but the typical method for
reading codes out of other cars of that vintage (like the 5kQ) you
access the codes in the ECU by inserting a spare fuse in the socket on
top of the fuel pump relay. This causes the codes to be blinked out via
the check engine light. Use the ECU diagnostics section of Scott
Mockry's site for more details (www.sjmautotechnik.com). Most codes are
intended to persist, if you have one that actually goes away you may
want to look at the owner's manual to see if it has any description of
this sort of situation. Here again, for example on the 5kQ if the CEL
comes on intermittently it is a sign that the ECU is detecting
significant knock ... this may not end up creating a persistent code you
can blink out ...
