I have seen that picture but choose a bit more easy approch when I placed a
3B head on my ur-quattro WR block 1983.
Instead of welding I molded with chemical metal from Lochtite, which can
take 150 deg C, just a flat area on the side top of the block.
An inch deep too to support.
Did not made it oval because an inch deeper the canal is round - and the
canal is only used when warming up.
I have not run much with that still but it seems to work. I have used the
same metal to repair a hole from a bent rod at the side of a 3B and that is
50.000 km ago.
The reason for not filling up the head with some aluminum was the problem
with the gasket where I use a S6 or new type 3B metal gasket.
The gasket have the oval hole too.
