Instead of going to an internal pump you could simply drain the tank,  
purge it with some inert gas, and install a larger outlet on the  
bottom - just weld on a bit of like 1" tubing, then use a 1" use into  
a reducer right at the pump. You'd DEFINATELY want to run a pre-filter  
as you'd be deleting the in-tank sock, but it would fix any problems  
with the gravity fuel delivery.
