I seem to remember doing it on a "cheap" engine stand.  The crank 
locking tool pushes against the "snubber" front engine mount thing, and 
we probably just used available things like Brendan-mass to counter the 
engine/stand wanting to fall sideways.

Similarly, the head bolts, at a few hundred foot pounds torque, required 
a counter ballast in the form of human muscle to work on an engine in 
the air, on wheels.
