[urq] (re)installing A/C on an ur-q

Mike -

I think you and I talked - but I'll reply for the {hopeful] benefit of the
list.

I had the 2B bracket that mounted the alternator under the A/C compressor.
For some reason on my car it caused a loud siren effect. Verified once when
we put the car on ramps and revved the motor - very clear siren coming from
the alternator fan. I tried 3 different fans, even tried modding one. No
worthwhile difference. Alex Stickler has the bracket now - maybe he has had
better luck than I. I did notice that 2B used it on their widebody car that
they brought to Urq25. I don't recall ever hearing the siren - then again I
didn't hear it run much - but I did hear it run and don't recall a noise
like I experienced...

My A/C system is bone stock save for a modified low pressure hose. It works
"ok" now with R134 but do plan to convert back to R12 by next summer. While
the mini york is not optimal - I know of several original systems that blow
very cold air - I'm convinced the ones that don't have issues - leaks, bad
valves, too much or too little refrigerant, something. I like the idea of a
new better compressor - I feel like I heard somebody do this - but have no
details. I wonder what is more of a PITA - getting this system to work well
or messing around with finding a good small rotary compressor, custom
bracketry and hoses, etc. I wonder if a more modern (efficient) condenser
alone would help on this older system? A/C experts? Dave D?

Well after the trip to Glenwood I have decided to

put back the A/C I removed. I am running a 944t

intercooler which required moving the alternator

to where the original A/C compressor lived.

Talking with those that have BTDT with the

2Bennett's bracket there were problems with the

alternator surging. Has anyone used the bracket

and not had alternator noise?

I was also thinking of running a newer style

compressor for weight and efficiency? Has anyone

done this, model, installation issues?

Thanks, Mike Hopton
