There have been advantages on both sides of the pond for more than a few years.
We have always had cheaper petrol, and more wide open roads on which to burn it.
Europe has always had the better hardwear as our govenrment felt compelled to protect our manufacturers from the direct competition of the superiorly engineered imports and banned the good stuff from our shores hiding behind the "safety" skirt (read bumpers and other trumped up excuses, etc.).
We often found work-arounds for the mechanical issues, but over on your side there is no getting around the high cost of fuel and constrained geography.
