Pat,

Not everyone has a Metal lathe at home/work like it seems you do. ;-)

Yeah, you could do that, but Brendan's has the thread reworked to  
prevent binding and is actually made of stainless rod stock with the  
thread cut into the piece.
In a pinch, I've also used an aftermarket wheel stud to align the  
wheel.  Whatever works.
