Today , I found out that there are 3 different cilinder heads used on the 10VT ur-quattro's .
I have this 1981WR ( US- WX) wich was , let's stay pollite , severly mistreated by its previous
owner(s) . No choice but to take it all apart and start from scratch .
The solid lifters head must have been taken off with a chisel or a screwdriver .
Also found a piece of a bolt in one of the cilinders .
Severly scratched and bruised . Possably salvageable but not quite sure .
But then I have this brand new hydraulic head available , so I thought why not use that one .
To my surprise the old head cam shaf doesn't fit the new head .
Further inspection showed that this old head is abt an inch longer then the other
ones I have availble . I have both solid and hydraulic heads I can compare with .
The dizzy lock nut is on the rear side of the head , between dizzy and firewall and not between
the 5'th cilinder spark plug and the dizzy like I'm used to . Never knew this .
Did some asking around , and I was told this kind of head was used until the early 1982's .
Mine must have been one of the last ones .
So now I need to make a decision .
- Either try and rescue the solid lifters head .
But I've heard hat the valve cover gasket is NLA , don't we love audi :)) .
- Or continue with the hydrualic head anyway , and use an MB/MC camshaft .
The MC head is all ready to go : machined , cleaned , new valve guides and gaskets , new
hydraulic lifters etc etc so I would prefer to use that one .
Is there any BTDT with the MC camshaft on an early UR-q engine .
Cam timing does alter engine caracteristics , and I have no idea if this MB cam is gonna be for better
or for worse compared to the WR/WX . Ign and fuelling remain stock .
