[urq] UrQ frustrations

You should be able to use any speed or reference sender from an urQ, 5kT,
200 or V8Q ...

Before you get too far you may want to confirm that there's still a
reference pin on the flywheel. The usual failure mode for the variable
reluctance sensors is that they stop working when hot but return to function
at cooler temps.

In fact, you did not detail the troubleshooting that you did to lead to the
determination that the reference sensor was kaput. Are you sure the problem
isn't that the timing belt slipped and the distributor timing is no longer
correctly aligned with the crankshaft?

What a couple of weeks, tackled the heater core which was relatively smooth
sailing given my lack of A/C, but of course the new unit is a mm longer and
having real trouble getting the end trim panel to clip in, but no worries
yet. Had to take the car on a 40 miles run for a meeting as my S car seems
to have munched a rod bearing and is down for a while. On the way to the
meeting I find that I no longer can engage 1,3,5or R! sweet, business
meeting with a big honcho and I'm not gonna make it. Already a laughing
stock for having the S car break on business 300 miles form home. (but that
is another story!) the day may be saved as the UrQ has the torque for a 2nd
gear start and you can actually do the hwy speed limit here in 4th, who
knew. Get there on time and nurse the car home again, to find the tranny
fine adjustment rod scattered its soft rubber grommets through its previous
29 years and I was damn lucky to have 2nd & 4th. Props to Stott Hare who
had replacements stashed for a 4KQ that lived during the Jurassic and 2 days
later I was on the road, shifting better than ever with brand new 13 year
old NOS bits. All is good for a scant 18 hours when I drive the car to work
shut it down and decide I parked as if by braille and I try to fire it up
for a second try. Cranky/cranky and nothing. Very hot here finally so I
figure maybe I vapor locked it and will try later. Many hours later ditto,
have fuel so check spark and nada. Grab the trusty UrQ IST and go through
the steps. Doesn't take long till I fail the "reference mark sensor
signal". Passed the speed sensor test, sensor on top of bell housing, ref
mark sensor is way down on the block on drivers side. Never heard of this
failure in an UrQ but on plenty of 5KTQs etc. Anyone have a PN for this or
know of best place available? Kinda need to get this back on the road as it
is my DD till the S is back which won't be soon!

thx

Mike

PS Also no freq valve or fuel pump relay in the circuit to worry about, and
car passed, hall sender test, ICU, test and coil tests, etc but any other
ideas welcome for when I R&R the sensor and it still doesn't work or breaks
again a day later!
