Window Weld Ribbon Sealer #08612 by 3M is a black pliable "rope" which is what I have used to seal my lights when I changed them.
I got it at the local Checker or Autozone - been a couple years but it wasnt hard to find at all
It seems very close to what was originally used, and might even be 25 years better technology...
Be patient and try and apply even pressure, a heat gun my be of big help depending on your climate at the moment.
Best of luck with it

Subject: [urq] Replacing rear lights with darkened units
I started the process this weekend and have discovered that my existing rear
stock lighting units are cemented to the bodywork with a black rubberized
material. Has anyone who has done this swap found the same thing as I cannot
say that I had noticed this before on my car let alone anyone else's?
I am afraid that the process of removal may break the plastic or damage the
bodywork?
When you installed you new lights, did you replace the sealant and if so, with
what? RTV? Silicone?
Colin
