[urq] fried starter

Gary,
That's kind of a contradiction, regarding the voltage readings. Although the battery isn't fully charged
(should be 12.6 volts at room temperature) it does indeed sound like a battery problem.
My only concerns are why is the voltage gauge dropping to 1 or 2 volts while the voltmeter is showing
@9 volts. Last time I checked the voltmeter gauge wasn't connected through the load reduction relay,
resulting in no voltage during cranking.
Even with the accessories on (depending on time) there should be sufficient reserve capacity in the battery
to maintain voltage above 9.6 volts in a reasonable time frame.
Is the engine turning over at a reasonable speed?
I guess a substitute battery would be the easiest a quickest test.
As for the ground connection it's the main one at the battery, and the one at the drivers side motor mount,
I think going from memory.
I'm still not completely convinced about the battery, but I'm not there in person and haven't connected a
ammeter to have a correct answer for you.
Good luck,
Craig.

Welp-
I checked the battery..12.45 volts. Then it drops to 9 when I crank the starter, while the voltmeter drops to like 1 or 2.
Stop cranking, the battery recovers back to 12.45 volts.
I turned all the accessories, brought the battery down to 8 volts...then it recovered to about 10 with accessories still on. After I shut off all accessories, the battery recovered back to 12 or so.
Which ground strap are you guys referring to? There is on at the front of the valve cover going to the body, and one at the back of the valve cover going to the coil mount. I think there is one by the drivers side motor mount as well.
AFAIR, the alternator is grounded via its mounting bracket.
thanks
Gary
