Well, if you don’t remember the last time the fluid was replaced, then do it now.
To empty as much fluid as possible, pump the brake pedal until rock-hard, this will empty the bomb into the reservoir, and remove one of the bottom lines from the reservoir or siphon the fluid with an “appropriate tool” (no, it is NOT correct to use the kitchen turkey baster... an urQuattro deserves better than that!). You could also take the reservoir to the bench, clean it and replace the filters on the bench. This is a good idea to replace the non-expensive rubber return lines, just to be safe.
The switch under the bomb indeed measure pressure from the circuit, and yes it is the same fluid. But I don’t’ remember that fluid was pouring from there. Doing it at the same moment is a good idea.

I bought this 385 filter (both actually) a year ago because of an old post where someone claimed this 'wood' like filter disintergrated and caused expensive leaks.
So I've read about pumping the pedal 40x but have never opened the resevoir. Should I just replace the filters or is is a good idea to also change the fluid or do something extra?
The electrical switch under the bomb seems to be leaking a little - is that the same fluid? Maybe if I replace the switch at the same time I'll end up draining the fluid (will it pour out when the switch is removed?) Thanks in advance.

It's an Ur-Quattro! Price is irrelevant. ;-)
32-41-1-123-323 - $47.15 Canadian dollars
32-41-1-120-715 - $$20.40 Canadian dollars
At the BMW parts counter.

For those who are interested,
Cross reference of Audi numbers to BMW part numbers for the filters inside
the steering fluid container:
857 422 384 --> 32-41-1-123-323 (Filter element)
857 422 385 --> 32-41-1-120-715 (0il filter)
These numbers are a perfect match. I just picked them up at the BMW dealer.
BTW, they were ordered from Germany and I got them in
Canada in less than a week. I was impressed. Kudos for BMW.
Cheers

That BMW number comes up only for the E23 733i. It's supercedes the older
number 32 41 1 120 717. Here's a screen shot of the BMW
diagram showing another filter piece and a strainer:

Just ordered the filter (857 422 384) from a BMW dealer. I should have it
in a week.
I could not find the 857 422 385 filter. The parts guy at the BMW could not
tell me which car the (857 422 384) BMW part number (32
41 1 123 323) came from he had no catalog display for this number so I hit a
dead end. I could not tell if the Bimmer used the 2nd
filter.
Does anybody have an old parts catalogue for the Bimmer? From BMW number it
looks like it might be for a 323. But I'm only
guesing.
Thanks Louis-Alain for all the info.
Cheers

Looks like I answer my own question about the 857 422 384 :
I still have the filter I removed from the car a few years ago (2007): it is
indeed a H67/1 Mann Micro Top filter, and the BMW number is also printed :
76 32 141 104. It was in the car since I bought it in 2001.
Now, I don’t remember if the "new" one in the car that I got from Audi is
the same Mann or a genuine VAG. On the VAG box, it says 1996...

Guess what ? I found one : http://tinyurl.com/bmw-hydro-filter
Could it be the one ?
H67/1 from Mann-Hummel filters.

If Bill Bennett was right, one or both were the same as a 7-series from the
mid-eighties.

Gentlemen,
It finally bit me.
I replaced the bomb on the 83 Ur-Quattro, and wanted to replace the filters
in the fluid tank. They are part numbers:
857 422 384 - Filter
857 422 385 - Filter element
Well guess what? They are NLA at the dealer (in Canada).
Does anybody know where these can be found? Third parties? I would hate to
refill the system with nice synthetic Mobil ATF and
leave the 25+ year old filters in there.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers
Lino
