[urq] front seats

Pat,
I just went through this, when I installed the seats from an '83 Ur Quattro into an '86
CGT. Yes they swapped sides on the slider brackets, and the v-bracket in the car is
opposite direction. Essentially Audi exchanged right side to left side with the seat
mountings. There are several solutions. The easiest way I found is ..
Assuming you will toss the orginal seats, or can obtain a trashed set, or you can
fabricate - there is a little triangular metal bracket under each seat that the
adjuster rod rides in. You will take that bracket off the old/donor seat - I removed
with hammer and chisel, since it was welded onto the crossbar. Alternatively, it is a
simple part that can be made from some steel plate you could get from a Hardware store,
but at least get on off for a template. You could conceivably remove the braket from
the seat being used if necessary, but it makes sense that someday one might want to
install the seats in the year car that they came out of.
You will bend slightly and install on the opposite side. I did so by drilling holes and
using self-tapping sheet metal screws. I also mounted the bracket on the bottom of the
rod instead of how it was welded on the topside of the rod which is not as easy to get
to . Just need to bend the bracket a little flatter and it will work perfectly. I got
it to align correctly by installing the front bracket first with the rod from the other
side. I drileed a pilot hole through the bracket and into the seat tube to get aligned.
Three #8 screws are sufficient to hold it in place. I used a # 10 in the middle and two
#8 on the sides.
Then swap the front bracket that the rod pivits on - there were already holes drilled
in my UrQ seats, and it was obvious they intended that the bracket could be mounted on
either side. You actually want to provisinally install the front bracket first to align
the back bracket.
I know this all sounds confusing at first, but once you remove the seats and turn them
over, the solution will become clear.
Also you have to remove the metal seatbelt strap from the donor to the recipient, since
for some odd reason they changed this too. This was pretty easy swap between seats -
one bolt.
I assume you are swapping the high bolster leather UrQ seats from the older car to the
newer to get rid of cloth, but if taking seats from newer car to install in older, this
will work as well.

Today , I discovered that early and later seats are incompatible .
My '81 has the slide lock mechanism to the outer sides , towards the doors .
My '87 ( coupe quattro ) seats have the lever on the other side , towards the tunnel .
No big deal to either move the lock mechanisme or the lever to the other side . But it
was something I didn't expect .
And the seat belts are incompatible to. So I' ll have to swap those as well.
