I've alway's had the problem when starting the engine ,
the starter could barely cranck it .
As if I had a drained battery .
Tried several batteries , even a huge truck battery .
Tried putting in another starter . No avail .
A friend's '83 has thesame behavier so I kinda accepted it
as being normal .
Today , while solving my fuel pulp issue I discovered that the
main cable from the battery doens't run straight to the starter .
It begins as a 35mm²cable , but under the glove box there's an aluminium T like junction .
Two 6mm² wires wich go to the fusebox , and a single 25mm² wich continues to the
starter are connected to that junction . Can you guess what happend ?
Right on . Oxidation , corrosion contact resistance .... whatever
I squeezed the connection with a vice grip to crimp it a little harder .
Bingo ! Starter works like a charm now .
All in all , a very poor piece of engineering .
That cable should have gone straight to the starter , and the fusebox should have been powered
either directly off the battery or off the starter .
