Well, Porsche has an interesting history of relatively great designs that defy a certain 
logic.  The first 911s probably got struts because one of the design briefs was that the 
luggage compartment needed to hold a set of golf clubs.

I would suggest that struts are a practical solution, but to issues of cost and packaging.

They do amazingly well, I suppose.
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while!

It may be a less expensive to certain alternatives, but the 911 has
used them up front for a couple years, and it seems to do pretty well
given that automotive engineering theory implies that it should be a
failure as a practical solution.

Either way, I dig 'em.
