The panoramic picture that was created during the AF97 meeting at Pikes Peak
just popped up as the background on my computer . boy, that brings back good
memories! I wonder if someone saved that length of blue plastic fencing
from Mt Washington?
The perennial question returns . what is everyone thinking about the UPG
this year?
Out here on the left coast there's been a bit of a shake up in the historic
racing landscape . General Racing has moved from Laguna Seca (Mazda Raceway)
to Sears Point (Infineon Raceway). The "Monterey Historics" are now called
the "Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion" (doesn't that just roll off the
tongue!), and the old montereyhistoric site takes you to the "Sonoma
Historic Motorsports Festival" .
At Monterey the Bugatti Club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary during
the event on August 12-15. I see a press release that indicates the public
is also invited to the pre-event reunion on August 7-8. My proposal would
be to schedule a trip to Laguna on the Friday of the event (8/13), with a
UPG related event on the following day. I haven't talked to Javad about
this yet, but I suspect he'll be his usual hospitable self should we want to
take advantage of his shop again this year.
The Sonoma event is scheduled for June 5-6 (only the weekend days) and I was
not able to find a schedule of events. There is no featured marque. Funny,
where I can't remember how many times I've been to Laguna Seca over the
years, the number of times I've visited Sears Point would fit on one hand .
easily.
At present my plan is to coordinate the NorCal UPG get together in concert
with the August event as described, but I'm open to the Sonoma event, or any
other event that seems to be a rallying point for urq fans .
One more general comment relating to the UPG is that there seemed to be some
real interest in the UPG by the staff at Grassroots Motorsport. We were a
bit late to the party last year, but I did obtain some contacts there. I
wonder if we could interest them in an article covering all the UPG events
that take place this year?
