I have had a similar experience with my heater core replacement, but
without the gurgling noises. The lack of heat in my car, I always
attributed to my poor job of weatherstripping around the core. As small
as that core is, it wouldn't take much arctic air leaking around it to
minimize the heat. I don't drive my urq much in the dead of winter
anymore, so I haven't been motivated to try re-sealing the core.
Good luck finding the gurgle,
Dave
