[urq] Damaged cylinder walls caused by sand?

Last summer (2009) I had my GV engine rebuild at 300K KM and the shop said there was damage on several cylinder walls recognized as sand. We checked all air related intake hoses but couldn't find any cracks or splits etc. What are the 'usual suspects' of getting sand in the cylinder compartments?
