[urq] Another Urq for sale

The problem with modifications, including paint, is they become equalizers.... In the end, the only difference then becomes 'buying down' the mileage, nothing more. A glass out paint on a high mileage car, would be 'better' than a glass-in paint on a low mileage car. Looking around at some of the more involved projects on these cars, mileage becomes less valuable, all else being equal. Original paint is not over-rated when in the very top dollar pricing. It becomes the value. The good thing about urq's, is that they are driven, there are very few un-driven urq's. But there are still quite a few original paint urq's on the road that have great paint.

This car, as it was delivered to you in '99 might have fetched the money immediately, because the value was, as you bought it. Today, you could buy a decent urq for 5-6k, and have a lot of money to 'buy back' a lot of cool toys the way you want them.... Back full circle to a repainted modded low miles urq vs high mileage urq. I try to understand the buyback in miles then. I just don't, and more importantly, I couldn't fairly justify it for anyone else. It's a nice car, no question. But again, the expectation and definition of that, really isn't how you see it, it's how it presents itself.

And as a seasoned reality tv watcher in the urq sales theatre, I still hope you sell it at that price.

Scott,

You may be right. Time will tell. I don't expect to sell the car quickly, I
expect it will take some time.

As for the "missing parts," if I could have found them, they'd be on there.
I'm still looking and maybe I'll find them yet. I do have more documentation,
which I'll happily share with a prospective buyer. I understand the process of
selling a car to a long distance buyer, as I have been that guy more times than
I can count.

One last thing. Original paint has to be one of the most over-rated things in
the world. I have quite a few low mileage, original paint garage queens, many
of which are much lower mileage and some of which are much older. Put this car
beside one of those and the paint quality will blow them away. This wasn't a
simple repaint; this was a selective restoration of the paint on this car,
keeping as much paint original as made sense. It wasn't easy to remove the
pinstripes but I didn't ever like the cars with them. You can't drive a
quattro and not suffer damage to the original paint. Even if you drove it with
no other cars in sight, the car's own wheels will do enough damage. The back of
the wheel arches, the lower body panels, the underside of the bumpers.... you
know the areas I'm talking about; they all look pretty poor on most of these
cars. At some point you have to ask yourself, who are you trying to please?
Are you keeping the car in a certain condition for the
"next guy," or do you want to make yourself happy? I like my cars to look good
and this one looks 100% better than when I bought it. It's a choice I made,
just like the issue with the driveability.

I just recently sold a Porsche 930 to a buyer in Germany. I had done much the
same thing with that car, in terms of trying to bring it back to 100%. Some of
the paint on that car was repaired/repainted too, as those cars typically suffer
from a lot of damage to the paint, in certain areas. The buyer initially had
the same reservations about originality but, once he saw the car, he couldn't
have been happier with the end product. I know it cuts across the grain of the
old school viewpoint in valuing a collectible/special interest car but I think
times are changing a little bit.

We'll see, sooner or later.

Cheers,
JR
