[urq] radio problem

The wiring diagram I use for my '83 shows the same Blk/Red wire that feeds
the cigarette lighter feeds the radio power ... which is then protected by
S7 in the fuse box ... but obviously your car is different.

You need to be careful about swapping in the Sony unit in terms of the
incoming power. IME the Sony's aren't designed with the concept of constant
power to the main unit, they expect power to be switched by the ignition
switch. If you wire the main power to the constant power from the battery
you may well wear down the battery because of the radio's face illumination.

I also notice considerable alternator/ignition noise on the Sony units (I've
seen this on several units on several Audis). What I have done, and what
I'd recommend you consider is running a separate power supply under the
carpet to the console. I use a in line blade fuse holder at the battery
end. To provide switched power I powered a relay coil from the switch that
is used for the warning chime for leaving the key in the ignition. This way
the ignition does not need to be switched on to run the radio, but the
illumination is off when the key is out of the ignition. The normally open
relay contacts are used to interrupt power to the deck.

OK, I've done somethng silly and now can't see the wood for the trees.
My Blaupunkt CD player was playing up and so I decided to change it for a
Sony. Silly me plugged in to the sony via the bunch of leads already
attached to it. It worked briefly and then nothing. The unit still works
because if I find a fresh permanet live (cigarette lighter) and a suitablle
earth it fires up. However, the original live feed is now dead. Why I don't
know. Does anyone know where the red wires come from? There are no blown
fuses in the fusebox. Does the permanent live for the radio come from
somewhere else with it's own fuse? If so where?
I'm really puzzled and very tired so not thinking straight, I have not
noticed anything else not working which would be a clue.
Any assistance gratefully recieved as usual.
Many thanks

p.s. just to confirm - I only need 4 wires to the radio right? permanent
live, earth, illumination and feed to electric aerial.
The autocheck has it's own separate speaker on my car so no feed to NF on
radio.
Cheers
