The external valves explanation can be best understood here.

I have used the 7 position Tilton almost exclusively in a few dozen installs (Audi and others), and see no reason to use anything else. You set the crossover for given conditions, and there is no guess what that crossover is for the same conditions. As a rule, I've used a total of 4 settings, 1 for street and 3 for track (based on conditions). For a full out race car, the infinitely adjustable valves are nice for fine tuning by the driver, but I see no use in putting that into any street car. Especially one that has the 'chance' of being driven by another party...

I will also note, that I most of the installs I've done, rarely get touched after I set them. At best, they may get moved to the 'advised' track setting. I see no reason to spend a lot of time analyzing this common mod. It's a good one for adjusting proportioning v8 rears on the urq to avoid premature rear lockup with the stock prop valve from Audi, that's all.

In regards to the tilton and any other proportioning valves for rear brakes,

they work in the same way as the stock one. They allow full pressure up to the

point at which the valve is set, at which point it limits the line pressure.

This is a BIG reason never to use them on the front brakes because when you

would need them the most, they'll go away.
