Subject: Problem vibration in the front end? SQ feedback...

For those whose help was offered on the vibration issue with my SQ - here is what happened.

Bushings and control arms looked good and ball joints were tight. So to get to the upper strut bushing per Scott and our perspective we discovered the driver side shock was worthless and both bushings had taken a beating. Thanks to 2Bennett we were offered plenty of choice with a replacement set of shocks and bushings and it made a very positive difference. But it was not quite right and with 2 Bennett's encouragement we put it on the lift and ran the drive line. as a result and despite my protestations that I had already rotated the wheels, and tried another set, Don Istook took the tires off and counterbalanced the wheels as well. Noticing that there was some run out on the stock 15 X 9 wheels and a none too even powder coating applied many years ago. With best matched wheels up front and a dealer alignment to the (very secret never published) factory spec all is now well and the car is back to its zippy self.

Counterbalancing=balancing the wheel and the tire to try to maximize offsetting weight differences thereby minimizing the amount of balancing needed.

So thanks again to all. I personally was convinced it had to be CVJs but calmer and more experienced heads prevailed

The symptoms you describe identify a couple items to check, and suggest doing it in this order. First, make sure all your brake pistons are fully retracting. Second, take a pry bar and check for play in the control arms/subframe. Third, check to make sure the ball joints are tight in the control arms themselves. Lastly, look for play in the upper strut bushings.

No sign of an alignment problem with no sign of tire scuffing. I had

thought about caster but the it would have to be excessive for vibration and

would be evident throughout the speed range.

Its not an instability or dartiness caused by toe out. Plain and simple

wheel oscillation as one would find with a major wheel imbalance. But its

not that as the wheels have been swapped and changed.

The Sq is really an Urq that took an incomplete dose of steroids. Audi had

to build them this way to meet Piech's budget constraints: the road cars had

to pay for the rally ones.
