[urq] Central Door Locking Failure

Over the past couple days I spent a few minutes poking around the Bentley
manuals.
I was surprised to see that even the '87 4000CSQ only had one pneumatic lock
control switch ... on the driver's door. To get a "bi-pressure pump" that
has two switches you need to go to the larger models (5000/100/200). I've
got an '88 5kCSQA in the garage, so the next step will be to find where the
pump is located and verify whether or not the form factors are compatible.
Over time Audi integrated the lock and alarm, which means the pump module
got significantly larger (e.g. on the V8Q).
The next thing to check will be whether the door switch can be swapped and
installed on the passenger door, or if I'll need to find a 5000 to pull the
vacuum motor with switch from the front passenger's door ... and if that
would even work ...
I found an '87 CGT at a local pick-n-pull, and the car still had the
bi-pressure pump, so I pulled it and now have a functional central locking
system in my car again. In the '87 the pump was shrouded in a fiber
silencer box, which I also now have in my car ...
Thinking about the V8 I realize that the pump module incorporates some
desirable features (in the '91 model anyway) ... There's a lock/unlock
switch on the door panel, the "convenience feature" that rolls up the
windows when the key is held in the lock position, advanced control of the
interior lights ... plus the alarm. Perhaps I'll spend a few minutes
considering whether or not I should work this baby into my car ...

Next project (actually nearly complete) - modify the warning chime to sound
when the driver leaves the car with the radio or headlights on ...

Hi Steve, thanks. Both doors would be a nice feature indeed. Can't we just
use copy the wiring / switch from the other side?
>The one thing I'd check before digging into the pump is that power is
getting to the pump. The switch may be bad, a fuse blown, wires broken in
the door hinge area, ... I've repaired the pump on my car, but it wore out
again, so I have it on the work bench. As I have time I'll get some
pictures. These devices are really pretty simple, and usually easy to
repair. Assuming that you are getting power to the pump, my first suspect
would be the mechanically linked switch which runs the pump, pretty sure
that was what was wrong with mine last time. I used a pump from a 4kQ
successfully, if you have one lying around you could test this when you
access the pump.
