Dan,
I agree with you wholeheartedly.  This may be speculation, but the General's
debacle with their "development" of a diesel engine back in the late 70's
early 80's, probably contributed to the fact that American's simply do not
like diesels.

Your ideal car is mine too- I wonder how feasible it would be to do a
transplant?  I have seen Landrover Discoveries and Toyota Landcruisers
fitted with a diesel drivetrain, and they are factory engines too, not
another brand name like Isuzu, or Navistar.  Can you imagine what kind of
torque you could get with the TDi, a six-speed, and with quattro that would
be unstoppable in any conditions!  Sigh, one can dream.

As noted, not an issue now for about 18 months. But diesel is still
generally 
more expensive than regular unleaded, so in addition
to amortizing the extra cost of the diesel engine, you also have to factor
in 
the higher cost. Guess it's a chicken and egg thing, in
that if there was more demand for diesel then the refineries would produce
more, 
lowering the cost. But people may not buy them
if the cost remains high so....

Personally, an A4 with quattro, the TDI and 6-speed manual would pretty much
be 
my ideal car.

I remember a few years ago hearing that the main reason more diesels are not

brought over from Europe is the quality of our fuel.
Something about sulphur content etc. Anyone else remember hearing such?

The A4 has been available in Europe with all sorts of TDi engine sizes and
uattro since the beggining (B5 chassis).
udi has been promissing tdi quattro powered cars for Canadian market for
long time now.  Somehow the usual excuse is that they are waiting for
he new platform with the new engine, that was 3 platforms ago!
I've lost hope and will be building one myself. ;)

Was it just me or there was an A4 TDI planned in the next year or so ? And
it was indeed a V6 3.0 TDI, an engine that produces 240 hp but 408 ft-lb
of
torque in the Touareg...

Is this still in the works ?
