Has anyone tried http://www.speedometergears.com/ VDO speedometers were
pretty generic other than the face and markings.
All you need to know is the number of teeth.

Also looks like this is also a mph speedo issue. I've had many many km/h
units going over 475,000km without any of them breaking.

I got an 11 tooth gear for my old 924 turbo and it worked perfectly.

The urq speedo is built just like those used in 4ks, 4kq, and coupe GTs.  If
the shaft driving gear is splitting nothing will work.  If that gear is
good, then the problem is with the pot metal gear at the end of the odometer
shaft.  You can try a drop of glue on it.  I sqeezed the flange on that gear
with channel lock pliers so that it cannot slip on the shaft.  PITA and
takes a couple of hours to disassemble and fix.  I fixed one of my speedos
with the splitting gear with a gear from an older 5000 junkyard car.

As Martin said, that is the sender for the cruise control, but whatever, as
long as it's working again, that's great.

This article lists where I got the (aftermarket) gear for my 90q:

http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/odometer.htm

Recently I have seen similar parts, for old Volvos, directly from a local
dealer, but I don't think VAG cares enough to sell the ones that fit their
cars.

But I don't think the UrQ speedo uses a part like this at all - the 90q
odo/speedo is electrical, and this is part of the "chain" that turns the
little motor's output into number rotation.

The UrQ odometer issue is usually a gear on the actual number driveshaft
that either starts slipping (slide off, roughen shaft, slide back on,
perhaps add a tiny drop of glue) or cracks and then slips.

Don't know if that place makes them as well.

available or floating around out there? I have one good and one cracked and
would like to get a couple of spares.

specialize in instrument repair of cars and ate vdo certified ad well as GM

can help. Don't know current pricing, though.

do it), in that it will keep clicking off miles on the odometer (so I know
the cable is intact and spinning) but the needle wont register speed. Stays
on the peg, and then out of the blue will spring to life and work for the
rest of the trip. When it started, I took it to Denver Speedometer, a place
I had used in the past, and the guy just sort of blew me off and summarily
said "$300 to rebuild it", and then asked to see it. He took a small
screwdriver, stuck it in the back and turned it. The needle bounced and he
handed back to me said "its fine, there's nothing wrong with it". He said
the needle is run by a magnetic pick up, and not a possible electrical
impulse or any other "usual" suspect. The problem seems worse when its hot.
