Yes there's usually some corrosion in that area .
And most of the time it's exactly where the o-ring seals .
But the good news is that it never causes problems .
Not in my experiance that is .

Carefully clean the contact area
With a steel brush on an angle grinder fi .
It takes some effort to get all the bit's of rust out .

If you want to , the water pump area can be treated with zinc or chromate
primer .
Make sure you get something with a good adhesion .

If the surface is badly corroded , audi has a 5mm O-ring instead of the std
4mm O-ring .
The 5mm produces a better seal but is a bit harder to install .
I usually also use some sealant , wich looks a lot like grease and is
normally used by plumbers
on pipe thread .Don't now the eaxact name in english .
I use it not to obtain a better seal , but to allow the pump to move freely
when
tensioning the timing belt .

I changed a water pump on a 5 cyl audi WE engine about 20 years ago and
something in the back of my mind makes me think the block area that the pump
sits on could corrode so that someday I won't get a good seal on that rather
large diameter o-ring gasket the water pump uses, and doesn't the water pump
adjust the timing belt tension? This means the water pump might end up
sitting right on the corrosion. Am I way off base on my old memories or
should I be prepared for difficulties? I'm going to be working on both a WE
and WX engine.
