Yes - I did thread mine before installing so once in place the screw went in
easier

Sounds like you have the correct handle, the new style is made for couple of
different application hence the two holes. As long as the rest of the
linkage hooks up correctly it should be fine. There is a little plastic
locking clip you will have to transfer from your old handle and don't forget
to transfer your lock tumbler if you want to retain your original key to
open the door. The hardware is self tapping so on brand new handles the
holes do not have threads, but it's a very soft material and the bolt goes
in no problem.
