I do not know 100%, but I believe the 3-wire switch does not directly
replace the 2-wire.
The 2-wire is design to support the entire start-up and operating current of
the fan motor, as
it is the on-off switch for the motor itself. The 3-wire sensors used in
the later cars are
meant to control relays which control power to the motor. So, the
electrical current demand
on these is much lower. I burned up a couple of 3-wire switches and
eventually decided that
was the reason after studying the wiring diagrams of the Urq and the later
Coupe GT.
I'm still using a 3-wire switch for my Urq radiator fan, but now it controls
a relay which handles
the primary current of the motor. It is quite simple to wire the switch up
this way, conveniently
without any hacking of the factory harness.
