Do you remember what oil was in there ? If memory serve, these gearbox don't
tolerate any 75w90 oil, specifically to protect the brass synchros... It was
something like GL4 vs GL5 specs... Someone techie should chime in about
this.
Martin ? Scott ? Steeve ?

Yes - puzzling. I have no idea. I originally replaced my transmission
because I chipped 2nd gear (from abuse - I admit it :-) and swapped in a
used 5ktq box - it had a bad 3rd gear synchro. So I got another used 5ktq
box - bad 4th gear synchro. I've heard of others having bad 3rd/4th gear
synchros but I always assumed 2nd would be the first go...

Brandon, do you have any idea why a 4th gear synchro would go bad ?
Usually, it's the 2nd gear synchro that wears fastest... except on the Saabs
where it's the reverse gear (because you must engage reverse to remove the
ignition key).

Yeah you know these old cars require you to pull some things to get to
others....
Yeah I've been driving with a bad 4th gear synchro for the last year after
swapping in TWO bad used transmissions last summer - so I'm getting one
rebuilt - all new bearings, new synchros, seals, cryo the gears....figured
"while I was in there" I'd address the squeaky suspension, replace the rear
diff mount and seals, upgrade the brakes, add a rear sway bar....you know -
just the usual stuff....
