Phil's exchanges on the list were sometimes fiery, often entertaining and 
I'm sure will become the stuff of legend but his knowledge of quattros was 
immense. I met him only once, before I knew who he was. At a rally day event 
at Castle Coombe - I had a Coupe quattro with a bit of a fuelling issue.  I 
had only just joined the quattro Owners Club and I was talking to another 
member and this chap was listening and unbeckoned, lifted the bonnet, had a 
look around, started the car and in short order told me a variety of things 
it could be. Then just as quickly, he turned on his heel and moved on. When 
I got home I went through the things he'd said and naturally he had been 
right. I asked who he was and was told "that was Phil Payne". I discovered 
that he had had a bit of a falling out with the Owners Club but on that day 
as far as I was concerned he'd just forgotten the blue tights and red cape. 
I never met him again.
However, when I eventually purchased a very broken proper quattro his web 
pages and email replies via the list and direct helped me no end. Sometimes 
with good humour, sometimes as if I was akin to pond life but I'm sure it 
was just how he was and for all the help he gave, he can be certainly be 
forgiven for having to put up with the uneducated and/or ill informed once 
in a while :-)
As every one says - he will be missed.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to post this information to the list.

Last Wednesday (December 5) Phil Payne passed away.

There's little I can say other than that I'll remember him as an unique
individual, a very clever guy, a font of knowledge and somebody who never
refused to help me with my quattro or provide useful advice.
