I think the diesels kill the fun of a race car from a fan's perspective. "The Noise" is half the fun.

About the quietness, diesel engines are not "throttled", so they always get
the full throttle airflow. Because of that, they usually get a very
effective intake silencer (or they would sound like full throttle all the
time) and also a very effective muffler for the same reason. More, they
don't spin as fast as gas engines, reducing again the noise level emitted. 

You said they are quiet, but is the sound still nice ? Are they fun to hear
? On tv, it doesn't sound that dreadful (especially in car...).

	Tit bit gleaned directly from an Audi mechanic when asked why the
diesels are
	so quiet:
			1.	The turbocharger(s) smooth out the exhaust
pulsations.	
			2.	After the turbocharger there is a mandated
particulate remover
				so that there is no evidence of the usual
diesel exhaust smoke.

	Between the 2 of them the sound is very effectively muffled.
