In the urq list tradition of answering your own questions.......Have since
done some research on the net and it rather looks as though (as I had
supposed) that Phil was right. It seems a larger clearance is needed when
measuring cold, because of the uneven expansion rates of aluminium and
steel. I'm still not entirely satisfied but as Phil was usually right I will
go with it. I'll then get the engine warm and re-do it warm and then there
can be no question.

Subject: [urq] WR valve clearances

Quick question for you because I have a mental block and can’t think
straight about this:
I have to check the valve clearance gaps on my WR. The late Phil Payne’s
excellent website has charts for warm and cold engines.
http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/wr_tappets_warm.html
I will be doing my head off the car and so cold. The two charts show wider
gaps for warm engines than for a cold one. Is this right or should it be the
other way around? On a cold engine, won’t the gap shrink as the components
warm up? So wouldn’t you want a bigger gap when doing a cold engine to allow
for the fact that the gap will close up as the parts warm up?
Can someone please put an end to my confusion. I expect Phil was right but I
can’t see the wood for the trees.
Many thanks

Keith
