No not a 'red herring, as per the other answer, totally makes sense. Not
enough 'ground', if indeed they are even working.

I *always* forget to check if  my brake lights are working as step #1 of
cruise failure. Inevitably, I find that I've been driving around, not knowing
my brake ligts were not working, and that's the cause of my cruise failure.
(Thanks to the flaky rear light housing connectors, in a car you are well
familiar with!)
