[urq] Koni vs Bilstein

My preference is for konis, but that comes from use on the type 44 chassis
and one instance on an 83 gti.

Bilstiens don't feel like they allow for any initial compliance to small
irregularities. I attribute this to the that they are gas-pressurized
whereas konis are straight hydraulic.

In addition, I have found that the gas-pressurized bilstiens cause the ride
heighth to be slightly higher, up to 1/2-inch. This was true in each of my
experiences.

In the GTI, I had a biltsien sport kit which was very tight, but
unforgiving. Later I used stock springs with bilstien HDs and it wasn't
much better."Jiggly" is how I describe the ride. Excellent control in
larger motions, but daily ride quality was jiggly.

I have a 93 v8 which had H&R springs and konis which rode comfortably but I
didn't want it lowered so I had stock springs put back in. Now it rides
firmly, but I'd not jiggly as I drive on smooth roads with minor
imperfections.

I have had bildtien HDs in 2 "big" cars with stock springs, a 91 200 avant
and a v8. The shocks in the v8 were new and those in the avant were several
years old. They both rode "jiggly" over otherwise smooth roads. Especially
when cold (Colorado). I have found willing buyers for each set however and
over time have found that I am in the minority in regard to my opinion of
bilstiens.

I still have the Bilstien sport kit for the Gti ad well as the HDs. Just
never tried to sell them.
