I'm going through this right now.  Even after modification, the VW part is NOT a perfect replacement.  The footprint is smaller, so you'll see an imprint of the original in the headliner around the circumference (may not bother you).  The bigger problem is that this part is also NLA new.  There are some NOS on eBay, usually black.  Used are there too, but still tough to find in beige.

Reports on the replicas out of the UK are a little mixed.  They're a better aesthetic match, but they don't hold the visor quite as securely as stock.  My visors are tight enough not to really need a clip to stay in place.  The replicas are pricey, but anyone who thinks they have a successful business model that includes selling them cheaper is certainly free to try.
