When i last had a problem with mine i took the door panel off and with some test leads and a spare battery hooked up the window motors and tested to see if they would rise and fall. Just wanted to satisfy myself that the motor/mechanism was ok (which it wasnt). If your lifting wires are frayed then you are on the back foot to start with and you know you will be seeking a replacement fairly soon. I don't know if the motors are servicable but if you are careful it might be possible to remove them from the mechanism and get them repaired. I'm sure i have seen them (the whole mechanism) still available here in UK. If i can find them i'll let you know. Might help you track some down over in the New World ;-)
Hope this helps.
Regards
