I don't think many cars have this "canister," mine certainly did not.  I'd say that you could install a "VW Fuel Filter" as can be found at many FLAPS, but IIRC your car is above stock HP and you might cause problems with fuel flow if you introduced that restriction.  I've seen things that look like empty fuel filters from carbureted cars which are in line to the manifold pressure line to the ECU, I think this would be more like the factory sediment canister.

Anyone else working on their fuel system and happen to have PNs for the sediment canister immediately downstream of the tank and the u-turn hose between there and the fuel pump? My local import parts place couldn't find a look up for either. Hopefully these are not NLA...
