Scott

anything is DIY with the right tools and confidence.

First I would recommend removing the accessory belt. Start the car. Then you
will Know if it is one of your acc. or your water pump. I have heard a few
aftermarket water pumps can squeal ( GAFF ) ( remove the acc belt just as a
confirmation ) I had this happen a while ago and it was the alternator. I
put on a replacement alternator ( it was shorted also and was killing the
battery ), the sound is back again , this time it is the PS pump with a vey
similar squeal. This would make sense as a bearing is a bearing.

You said it is coming from the drivers side but you did not say where you
are from. If it isa UK car that would be the alternator side, and if you
have a US car it would be from the AC clutch area would it not ?
If you are going to pull the acc belt for testing, give the pulleys a
spin and see if you can figure it out.
P.S. As i said I just did the alternator , and it is definitely a DIY
job, but be warned , they are NOT cheap.. but what am I saying ! we are
talking about AUDI.

Subject: [V6-12v] 96 A4 with squealing from front of engine

Hello,

My 96 A4Q has a squealing coming from the front of the engine bay. The
TB/water pump/acc belt are about 10 mos old. The sound appears to be coming
from the drivers side of the front, and I'm guessing it's either the fan
clutch/bearing or the alternator, based on where the noise is coming from.
The sound appeared once the outside temps dropped to circa mid 40s or lower.

Any BTDT or thoughts on if this is DIY? I haven't done too much with
working on this car this car other than maintenence (much more exp with
I-5s)
