Hi Joe --
Haven't checked my e-mail for a few days, so it's possible other people have
responded to this already. However, for knock sensor 2, here's the deal:
1. It's located at the right-hand, rear of the block, underneath the intake
manifold as it loops over the V. This is assuming that you're looking at the
engine bay from the front of the car. You should find that there's a little
'cutout' down through the outside of the intake manifold and you'll just be able
to see the hex nut that holds down the sensor.
2. The first thing you should check before doing anything else is that the
sensor(s) are tightened down to the correct torque, as if they work themselves
loose, they won't work properly. It's 20Nm, so get a torque wrench with a hex
head and check that.
3. If that's OK, you have a number of possibilities, mostly to do with faulty
wiring, before you condemn the actual sensor itself:
- First, unplug the connector from the knock sensor to the ECU - this is on
the firewall baulkhead between the engine and passenger compartment. You'll see
a row of five connectors in the middle, and three on the right-hand side
roughly up behind the coolant expansion tank. It's these that you want for the
knock sensor and it's the third plug along to the right in this group (green
coloured, three-way). Pull the plug (engine switched off) and check for a short
circuit between any of those connector pins (the ones on the sensor side, not
the ECU side). If there's a connection between any of those sensor pins the
knock sensor is faulty. Replace it.
- Second, if the knock sensor is not faulty, you'll have to check the next
bit of wiring (i.e. between the 3-way connector and the ECU. If you get this
far, e-mail me and I'll send you instructions, as they're a bit more complex and
I don't want to put them in e-mail unless I absolutely have to!
Good luck
James
