The sensor itself is located in the gear case above the ring gear, but it's a
hard-wired connection at that end, there's no plug/socket to test. You'd test
continuity at the grey three way connector in the group of five that sit on
one side of the baulkhead - it's the fourth connector from the drivers side on
Euro models, so I guess the fourth in from the passenger side on US models(?).
In any case, they're colour coded, so the grey three way should be the one.
As far as I'm aware, there is no fuse associated with that sender. To test the
sender - unplug the connector and measure resistance between contacts 1 and 2
from the sender (they should be numbered somewhere). The spec. should be 1K.
If it isn't, replace the sender. Next, measure the resistance between contacts
1 and 3, and 2 and 3 on the sender side. These should read at infinity. If
they don't, replace the sender. After that, you can check the circuit.

If you can't find an electrical fault, remove the starter and crank the
engine manually, checking the ring gear to make sure it's still true and not warped
in any way, then for any broken or missing teeth. If you don't find anything
there, the ECU may need replacing. However, the last possibility is that the
speed sender holder has shifted position. If it has, you'll need a couple of VW
special tools to re-set it (3242 and 3308). If you even get to that stage (I
hope it's a simple electrical fault!) email me and I'll send you the
procedure.

Cheers,
James
