I just cleaned the engine bay of my new-to-me '94 100 S Avant.
Since use of a high-pressure hose at the local quarter car wash
can cause all sorts of electrical problems, I took a less
intrusive approach. I used a spray bottle of Simple Green and
soaked the worst spots, sprayed the rest, being real careful
around the expensive electrical bits (ignition coils, sensors,
connections). After letting it soak in for 5 or 10 minutes,
I hosed it off. I also used a bucket of water with some Murphy's
Oil Soap and an old sponge to help get the worst of it off. Some
more Simple Green, half a roll of paper towels, and 30 minutes
later and I had a clean engine with no shorted out components.

A clean engine bay is a thing of beauty.
