Kent McLean <kentmclean at mindspring.com> asked:

I took the instrument cluster out of my '94 100 S to explore
replacing the ignition switch.....

On a related note, disconnecting some of the electrical
connectors was difficult. I had trouble prying out the
locking tabs on each side while pulling the connector.

Q. Any tips on releasing the locking tabs while pulling
on the connector? Is there a cheap tool that pries
    them apart while pulling?

Kent, my experience is with the 1990 200 and 1993 90...but on the 200, there
are three small bulbs with tiny plastic tabbed press/lock connectors for
warning lights on the passenger side of the dash. The tabs ALWAYS seem to
break when those lights are removed.

BUT - I found out quickly how to replace them and have them both stay put
and still be serviceable. HOT GLUE! A dab of hot glue on the housing of the
small bulb gave enough stickum to keep the bulb in place - but the next time
the dash cluster came out, it releases nicely when pulled upon.

I'd wager that there are many broken tabs behind Audi dashes, and this would
probably hold most of the lights in place if there's enough slack to handle
the bulb housings.
