Someone has already made suggestions on this.  I would add oxygen
sensors to the list, just because those go bad a lot.  Pulling the codes
is strikingly similar to pulling them on your Type 44.

If it's like the 90 (I think it is), it's a cable-driven interlock; the
cable starts at the back of the gear selector (closest to "1", farthest
from "P") and ends up at the back of the ignition switch.  I think that
adjustment is on the gear selector side, but I would start on the
ignition switch side anyway because it's easiest to get to :)
