"Calvyn" <Calvyn at stny.rr.com> clarified:

Evaporator as in (8D1 820 103 E33 600) costing $336.00 and I already
own it.. Yes it is located under the dash and that's what makes the job such
a PITA.. I don't know the specifics on exactly what it does but all I know
is that when it's broke I have NO A/C :(

My apologies for the earlier mistaken assumptions. Actually, for a dealer
item I would have guessed they'd charge more than that for an evaporator!
Sounds to me like you did OK.

That evaporator unit is like a small radiator inside the car. The
refrigerant flows through it and makes it really cold, and the fan forces
air through it, cooling off the air and thereby cooling the interior as the
air is circulated. It can get cracked or have a metal failure - unusual, but
it does happen. And my condolences for your misfortune on that one.

I suspect when they replace the evap they will also need to replace the
accumulator/drier, since its purpose is to remove condensation from the
refrigerant. Usually when an AC system has been open to the atmosphere, the
drier picks up moisture and should be replaced. this would be good to ask
the repair shop about. They're not that expensive though, I've replaced two
or three and they've all been $70-$90 range. They're just an aluminum
canister with a moisture-collecting material in it and two ports, inlet and
outlet. With the evaporator bad, then I'd think that with the new evap, a
drier and a fresh charge of lube and refrigerant, you'd be fully
operational.
