For an A4, you should be able to fit a 225 width tire.
However, your issue may be the stock wheels. The 97 A4 came with 7 inch
wide wheels (in both std and sport pkg, I think). A 225 width tire on a 7
inch rim may give you more sidewall flex than you want. I know 2 folks,
with a 96 and a 98 A4 respectively, who mounted 225 width tires on 7" wheels
(one was standard wide 5 spoke, other was 7 spoke 16" sport wheels), and
both felt that the tire was too wide for the wheel, especially on the track.
Niether had rubbing issues that I am aware of.
Also note that if your suspension is lowered (more than the factory sport
package) that might have an impact.
As always though, YMMV.
