Most cables are steel or stainless steel. You can't solder that stuff. At 
least not with regular 40/60 solder. Even if you could, the cable would be 
so frayed that it would be near impossible to join the ends. Sure you could 
insert a piece of cable, but in the end you'll still have two hard spots on 
the cable. I wouldn't be surprised if the cable would get stuck and you'll 
have to take the whole damn thing apart.

Sounds to me like spending $150 (and one hour's worth of work) on replacing 
the unit would be a better option...
