Great tips. I'll add the following that may help as
well.
<< 1) Replace drain plug on engine block (if you had
it out). >>
Be sure to have a new O-Ring seal on hand. I got that
tip from a Timing Belt/Wtare Pump proceedure I found
and was sure glad I knew. The old O-Ring was wasted on
the drain plug.
<< 2) Open bleed screw on the port side, aft of the
engine. It's a allen head bolt-like thing which is
located in the metal coolant line behind the engine,
next to the engine temp sensor.
3) Open bleed screw on the hose going to the heater
core (the one by the firewall, port side). >>
One of these bleed screws (both perhaps?) is plastic
and prone to easy breakage. Be gentle, and be prepared
for disapointment in case one breaks off.
<< 11) With the engine cold (next day): Verify that
the coolant level is at or slightly above minimum. >>
Perhaps I was extra-paranoid, or maybe I didn't get it
bled out fully, but it seemed that I had to top up the
expansion tank two or three times before the level
stabilized. When it did stabilize the level has now
remained the same for several thousand miles. In my
case the car is a 1995 A6q wagon.
