Clive,

Re: Thermostat and temperature: The thermostat opens at 87 deg C. So if the
system is well-cooled (highway speeds) the thermometer should show 87 deg
C. The temperature will rise in stop and go traffic.

I'm guessing here: It sounds to me like the climate control is having
trouble either controlling the temperature or measuring it. Maybe you
should verify the function of the temperature sensor(s). I believe there
are two temp sensors. One in the dash and one in the headliner by the
sunroof control panel. But I'm not 100 % sure of this. In the older cars
there was a small fan associated with the temperature sensor. It would pull
air past the sensor. I forget if this is maintained on the newer cars (I
seriously doubt it).
