Interesting. I've tried that at some point. I don't think I ever 
tried to read the codes and then immediately resetting them. But I 
did try shorting the two terminals closest to the edge of the fuse 
box at some point. When I reset the codes and then read them back I 
get the original fault code - not 4444.

Oh, well... Thankfully, it's been a while since last time my car threw a code.
