Yeah that's true - I'd forgotten about the spring in the stat. A leaking
head gasket would make sense if a coolant channel were blown. Any other
signs of a head gasket failure (bubbles in coolant expansion tank, oil in
coolant, gurgling noise on cool-down, etc.)?
